Medals, chasing bids and winning-at-all-costs competition focus needs to be changed—we are worth more than a bid chase. We are athletes that love to win, enjoy the podium recognition and think competition nurtures the character of those that participate. However, the drive to win by some gyms overshadows safety. Injured athletes frequently do not stop as they think they will disappoint their team/coach or the coach jeopardizes an injured player with the stated mentality of “suck-it up”. The necessity of a licensed trainer (not someone trained in First-Aid or CPR) at all competitions goes unnoticed because there is no accountability for this safety issue. Return to play protocols are sorely lacking and rarely monitored at any level within the cheer industry.
